Update on Stephanie

Some of the members of the organization called "Joy", including Stephanie on right

Monday, June 13

Hello,

We have an emergency prayer request.  Today one of the people who came for horse therapy/ministry with a group from an organization call “Joy”, which ministers to people with psychological challenges, fell from a horse which was in a trot at the time.  She has some horse riding experience and has been out to our ranch before.  She broke a vertebra which is pushing on the spinal nerve and preventing her from being able to move her legs or have feeling.  She will have emergency surgery Tuesday morning.  Her name is Stephanie and is 39 years old.  She is a sweet lady.  The horse was not doing anything unusual to cause the accident, she just lost her balance, which may be due to her medication affecting her equilibrium.  She told Laura not to worry and feel badly because it was not her fault.  Still, please pray for Laura as well because she obviously feels terrible about it.

Thank you for your prayers.  We will keep you informed.

Wednesday, June 15

Hi everyone,

I want to give you a little update on the lady who fell from one of our horses.  A CT scan and an MRI revealed that she had a broken vertebra pressing upon her spinal cord which was causing paralysis in both legs.  Emergency surgery was scheduled for the following morning, Tuesday.  Today, we have learned that the doctors have said that they have done all they can do and the rest is up to the natural healing process.  At this time she has not regained feeling or use of her legs, but there is some hope that she will with time. We believe that God is going to heal her.  Regardless, she still wants to come out to the ranch again, but probably not ride anymore.  Her spirits are good and she does not appear to be in much pain, for which we are very thankful.  We ask that you continue to lift Stephanie up in prayer.  We are praying not only for a miracle of healing, but also for God to receive glory in this situation.

For now, all we can do is pray and wait.  These things take a little time to see what nature does and what God does.  We have cancelled all of our programs for two weeks to give us a little time to reflect, pray and visit Stephanie in the hospital.  We cannot go back and change anything in the past, as much as we would like to.

I will write again on Sunday, after we have had a chance to visit Stephanie again in the hospital.  They are limiting visits to immediate family only for a while.

Sunday, June 19

Dear praying friends,

I hope you are doing well.  I want to give you an update on our visit Sunday with the lady who fell from a horse during therapy this past Monday.

The surgery the past Tuesday was not successful in restoring motion or feeling.  At this point Stephanie is totally paralyzed from the waist down.  The doctors say there is always hope, but they have done all they can do surgically.  They are trying to stimulate healing through various exercises but they warn that this process could take months at minimum.  It appears that she broke the T3 vertebra, although the family is not certain and were afraid to ask the doctor for more information.  She is not in pain but is taking heavy medication.

She was very glad to see us when we came.  She certainly does not blame anyone but herself for losing her balance because she got too excited.  She has a history of getting so excited that she can even pass out or have a mild epileptic seizure. (Good to know!)  The medicine she is on for her psychological problems help temper her emotions but apparently has limits.  She is going to be in this hospital for 5 more weeks and then be transferred to a neurological rehab center for several months or even a year.  With God’s help she will hopefully be able to walk again one day.

We appreciate your prayers and letters of support through this.  It is going to be a long time for Stephanie, but we must already have our “game face” on for the people who are anxious to come to our ranch.  We will not stop praying for Stephanie and visiting her in the hospital, and if we have something to report we will be glad to send out an update.  Otherwise, we sincerely ask that you keep her and us in your prayers.

Thank you and God bless,
Bevan and Laura
